What’s the real difference between SEO and AEO, and why should I care?

TL;DR: SEO (search engine optimisation) earns your website a position in a list of links; AEO (answer engine optimisation) earns you a mention or citation inside the single answer that ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews give your buyer. The foundations overlap — crawlable pages, clear structure, demonstrable expertise — but AEO rewards direct, quotable answers and consistent brand facts rather than keywords and backlinks alone. For Swiss and EU SMEs the stakes are simple: buyers increasingly ask AI assistants for recommendations, and content that cannot be lifted into an answer is invisible at the exact moment a decision is made.

What does SEO actually get you?

SEO gets your pages ranked in a search results list, on the assumption that the user will click through to your site. The classic toolkit — keyword research, on-page optimisation, technical health, backlinks — is built around that click. It still matters: search engines remain a major discovery channel, and a technically broken site cannot win anywhere. But SEO’s unit of success is a ranking position, and its payoff depends on someone actually visiting your page. That assumption is weakening as more queries end in an answer rather than a click.

What is AEO, and how is it different?

AEO optimises for being quoted in the answer itself, not for a position in a list. When someone asks ChatGPT “which AI consultancy should a Swiss SME work with?”, the assistant retrieves a handful of sources, synthesises one response, and names or cites a few brands. AEO (also called GEO — generative engine optimisation) is the discipline of making your content the kind these systems retrieve and quote: self-contained answers, question-phrased headings, verifiable facts, and a consistent story about who you are across the web. The unit of success is a citation or brand mention, and there may be no click at all — the answer is the impression.

Why does the difference matter right now?

Because the behaviour shift is already here, not coming. OpenAI reported around 800 million weekly ChatGPT users in 2025, Google has rolled AI Overviews out across Europe, and Perplexity has become a default research tool for exactly the executives Swiss consultancies want to reach. When a marketing director in Zug asks an assistant to shortlist agencies, the brands named in that answer get the meeting; everyone else was never seen. Traditional SEO metrics don’t capture this: you can rank on page one and still be absent from every AI answer, because the models favour content that answers questions outright over content engineered around keywords.

How is optimising for AEO different in practice?

AEO changes what a “good page” looks like. The practices that measurably increase your chances of being cited are concrete:

  • Question-phrased titles and headings that mirror how people actually ask — “how long does an AI pilot take?” rather than “Our Services”.
  • An answer block at the top: two to four self-contained sentences an AI can quote verbatim, before any background.
  • Answer-first paragraphs: the first sentence under each heading states the answer; the explanation follows.
  • Specifics over adjectives: numbers, timeframes, named tools and locations. “We deliver a roadmap in six weeks” gets cited; “we deliver value fast” does not.
  • FAQ sections with real questions, ideally marked up with FAQPage schema so the structure is machine-readable.
  • Entity consistency: the same company name, services and facts on your site, LinkedIn, directories and press coverage, so models can trust what they say about you.

None of this replaces technical SEO — models still need to crawl and parse your site. It sits on top of it.

What should Swiss and EU SMEs do differently?

Start from the questions your buyers ask an assistant, in the languages they ask them in. For the DACH market that usually means German and English at minimum, with pages that answer country-specific questions — Swiss data protection, EU AI Act obligations, CHF budgets — that a global competitor’s generic content cannot. This is where smaller firms have a genuine edge: AI answers reward the most precise, useful source, not the biggest brand. A focused page answering “what does AI implementation cost for a 50-person Swiss company?” can outcite an Accenture overview. We outline how we apply this thinking for smaller companies on our Fokus KMU page, and the practical mechanics in our GEO/AEO FAQ.

Do you have to choose between SEO and AEO?

No — and treating them as rivals is the most common mistake we see. They share a foundation: fast, crawlable pages, honest expertise, and content organised around what buyers want to know. The sensible sequence for an SME is to fix technical SEO basics first, then restructure your highest-intent pages into answer-first format, then build out question-led content for the topics where you want to be recommended. Expect different clocks: rankings typically move over months, while AI answers refresh faster — we have seen citations appear within a few weeks of publishing well-structured pages. Measure both: track rankings and organic traffic as before, and add AI visibility monitoring to see where your brand appears — or doesn’t — in actual AI answers.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

In practice, yes. AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation) both describe optimising content to be cited in AI-generated answers. GEO is increasingly the preferred term for LLM-based assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity, while AEO historically also covered featured snippets and voice search.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO’s technical foundation — if your site can’t be crawled and understood, no AI system will cite it. What changes is the content layer: answer-first structure, quotable specifics and question-led headings matter more than keyword density and link volume.

How quickly can AEO show results?

Faster than classic SEO in many cases. AI systems that retrieve live web content, such as Perplexity and ChatGPT with browsing, can pick up well-structured new pages within weeks. Answers grounded purely in model training data change more slowly, which is why consistency over months still matters.

How do I measure AEO success?

Track whether your brand appears in AI answers for the prompts your buyers actually use. Dedicated AI-visibility tools monitor mentions and citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews by topic; alongside that, watch referral traffic from AI platforms in your analytics.

Does schema markup still matter?

Yes, as a supporting signal. Article, FAQPage and Organization schema help machines parse who you are and what a page answers. But schema cannot rescue vague content — the substance of a clear, direct answer matters more than the markup around it.

Where should a small marketing team start?

Pick the ten questions prospects ask most in sales conversations, and publish one honest, specific, answer-first page for each. That single exercise covers most of what AEO requires and typically fits in one quarter alongside normal work. If you’d rather not build the muscle in-house, this is exactly what our advisory and content services cover.
